When
Cooler Heads Prevail features
Anschell in a trio
setting, augmented
by the vast percussion
arsenal of drummer
Woody Williams.
This is the first
recording to showcase
the percussion mastery
of Williams, whose
drumset work has
ignited the bands
of young lions including
Russell Gunn, Marcus
Printup, and Greg
Tardy. Anschell
and Williams are
joined on the disc
by two of the South's
leading bassists,
Rodney Jordan and
Neal Starkey.
When
Cooler Heads Prevail is
rooted in the
jazz tradition,
with a refreshingly
original sound
and repertoire.
The ten selections
range from Anschell's
intricate compositions,
to adaptations
of Swedish and
Peruvian folk
songs, to unusual
reworkings of "Sweet
and Lovely," "Little
Niles," and
the spiritual "Angels
Watching Over
Me." Through
it all, Anschell's
orchestral approach
to the piano,
Williams' colorful
percussion work,
and the bassists'
propulsive playing
combine to create
unusual grooves
and multi-layered
textures.
Additional
acclaim for When
Cooler Heads Prevail:
"Anschell's
work is melodic, tasteful and
the group is cohesive...I loved
this album from the first note.
Highly recommended!" Richard
Bourcier, Jazzreview.com
"Anschell
is impressive in his vision toward
both past and future, reworking
old-time folk songs and also creating
classic-sounding originals of
his own." Adam
